What is the R.A.C.E.S. Strategy?
R.A.C.E.S. is a step-by-step guide that helps students write clear, well-structured responses during tests. By following this method, students can ensure they fully answer the question while providing strong textual evidence.
Here’s how it works:
🟡 R – Restate the Question
Turn the question into a statement to set up your response.
Example: "The main theme of the passage is..."
🔵 A – Answer the Question
Directly and completely answer all parts of the question.
Example: "The theme is perseverance because the character never gives up."
🟢 C – Cite the Evidence
Support your answer with a specific detail or quote from the text.
Example: "According to the passage, 'Despite failing multiple times, she continued to train every day.'”
🟠 E – Explain the Evidence
Connect the evidence to your answer and explain how it supports your response.
Example: "This shows that the character demonstrated perseverance because she kept trying, even when things were difficult."
🔴 S – Sum It Up
Wrap up your response with a conclusion that reinforces your answer.
Example: "As you can see, the passage illustrates perseverance by showing how the main character continued to work toward her goal despite obstacles."
